Sustainability strategies focus decision-making on the achievement of specific goals to ensure that future generations have what they need to live well, including a healthy environment, social equity, and economic prosperity, while also meeting the needs of the present.
Comprehensive sustainability strategies make a call to action for everyone, including households and businesses, to make sustainable choices in the interests of future generations. They are more than just government policies and action plans; they provide guidance and resources for the whole community to work together for a sustainable future, facilitating collaboration, innovation, and targeted investment.
Credible sustainability strategies also provide a framework for measuring progress against the goals, targets, and actions, with regular reporting.
Adopting sustainable practices like switching to electric vehicles, installing solar panels, reducing waste and reusing and repairing items increase business and household efficiency, saving money in the long run.
Addressing inequality in our society, in our workplaces and communities will improve the wellbeing of a greater number of people and ensure everyone has the opportunity for a fair go at a good life.
Most importantly, sustainability ensures that future generations will have what they need for a good life too.
All Tasmanians are invited to help create Tasmania’s sustainability vision and goals by making a submission or answering the consultation questions provided in the Discussion Paper on this website.
Contributions received by 20 October 2023 will inform the draft sustainability strategy. Contributions received after 20 October 2023 will still be valuable to the future work of the project.
A draft sustainability strategy which includes targets and actions will be released for public consultation in 2024. Again, all Tasmanians will be invited to provide feedback on the draft strategy and there may be opportunities for face-to-face roundtables on specific topics, community workshops around the State and online forums during the consultation period.
Tasmania’s sustainability strategy is being developed in four stages:
- Stage 1: Research and focused workshops to identify existing capabilities, challenges, and opportunities. Stage 1 has been completed.
- Stage 2 commenced with the release of this Discussion Paper and focusses on engaging Tasmanians to establish our shared sustainability vision and aspirational goals through co-design and broad community consultation. Targeted consultation will also be undertaken so that we have a broad range of views. The consultation period will conclude on 6 October 2023.
- Stage 3 will be the development of a draft Tasmanian Sustainability Strategy, which will consolidate key targets and actions from existing policies and identify priorities for additional targets and actions. The draft strategy will involve further public consultation, and this will inform the development of targets, actions, and indicators for the final strategy. This process will be completed in 2024.
- Stage 4 will see the release of the final Tasmanian Sustainability Strategy in 2024 and the commencement of implementation.
